A harbour I wanted to visit

The ferry captain was my favourite character. Small details about the tide made the setting convincing, and I finished the mystery in two evenings.

Gentle rather than gripping

I enjoyed the neighbours and the warm ending. The lantern puzzle is easy to solve, so choose this for atmosphere rather than a difficult mystery.

Too many quiet conversations

The opening promised an adventure in the signal tower. Most chapters then stayed in kitchens, and the repeated conversations about leaving became tiresome.

Good company, predictable answer

The island community felt real to me, but I guessed the sender of the messages early. A pleasant read with very little suspense.

Loved the story, damaged copy

The apprentice and captain made a lovely pair and I would read a sequel. My copy arrived with several torn pages, hence the rating.

Worked well for our reading group

The chapters are short enough for a busy week. Our group had a long discussion about whether saving the island was what every resident wanted.
